Show Preview

The St George Illawarra Dragons travel up north for their first away fixture of the 2023 NRL season, facing the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:35pm (AEDT).

It has been nothing short of a dream start for the Broncos to 2023, defeating the Panthers on the road before a dominating 28-16 victory over the Cowboys in Brisbane.

After two impressive defensive performances, Kevin Walters will be hoping for the winning streak to extend for weeks on end.

The experienced head of Adam Reynolds and the youthfulness of Ezra Mam have had a full pre-season together, making themselves a formidable halves pairing for the 2023 NRL season. But don’t count out fullback Reece Walsh. Walsh lit up on his Broncos debut, with some pundits comparing him to a young Billy Slater (possibly a bit too far).

Settled in familiar surroundings and maturing from a few years ago, expect Walsh to light up Suncorp Stadium once again.

The Dragons are in unfamiliar territory, playing attacking footy in round two en route to a thumping 32-18 victory over the Titans. There has been plenty of pressure on Dragons coach Anthony Griffin, but a win against the Broncos would be a great result for him and for the external noise to remain quiet temporarily.

However, the Dragons have not been great travellers. During the 2022 NRL season, they won only three out of 13 matches away from home. Dragons skipper Ben Hunt, though, has never lost against his former employers since leaving them from the 2018 season.

If Hunt can step up with an almost flawless kicking game, the Dragons are in with a chance of causing an upset.

Prediction

All is nice and cozy in Kogarah and Brisbane. For now. A loss either way will not determine if thee two sides are premiership contenders or pretenders. However, both teams will want to ensure their winning streak continues.

The Broncos have the stronger spine, and that’s why I’m backing them to get the job done at home.
