Round 18 of the NRL premiership continues this afternoon when the Canterbury Bulldogs take on the Newcastle Knights at 4 Pines Park in Brookvale. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 2pm (AEST).

In all likelihood, the season has slipped away for both Newcastle and Canterbury, with some early promise having evaporated over the last month and both are thinking more about 2024 as the final third of the season looms.

The Bulldogs have lost five of their six matches and begun leaking points at an alarming rate. New coach Cameron Ciraldo appeared to have instilled some better defensive organisation and steel into the squad early in the season, but even as injured players have returned, the ship does appear to be sinking and a wooden spoon is well within the realms of possibility.

The Knights have lost four of their last five and slipped well off the pace in terms of qualifying for the finals, something they still held hopes of doing earlier in the season. Now Adam O’Brien is being talked about as a potentially sackable coach and for what feels like the norm, Newcastle remain as nothing more than nuisance value in the NRL competition.

The Dogs are much the same at the moment and the loser of this clash will have some serious reflection to undertake on Monday morning, knowing full well that their time as also-rans is far from over.

Team news sees the Bulldogs welcome back club-captain Raymond Faitala Mariner and Ryan Sutton into the selection frame and Harrison Edwards is available again after following concussion protocols. Adam Clune, Lachlan Miller and Lachlan Fitzgibbon all return for the Knights, in a strengthened squad, despite the unavailability of Dane Gagai due to injury.

Prediction

In what looks one of the toughest matches to tip across a tricky weekend, the Bulldog’s defensive problems could well be the difference against a Newcastle team that has been a little unlucky through the middle of the season. Expect Ponga to star and the Knights to put 35-plus on the blue and whites. Newcastle by 26
