Round 3 of the NRL premiership continues this afternoon when the Canterbury Bulldogs take on the Wests Tigers at Belmore Sports Ground. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:05pm (AEDT).
This match-up features two of the contenders for last year’s wooden spoon. Whilst the Bulldogs’ early form suggests a finish somewhere in the middle of the pack this season, the Tigers’ outlook remains dire. They will be hoping that this changes after this afternoon’s encounter.
After a first-round loss to forget, the Bulldogs opened their account last weekend with a 26-12 away win against the Storm. While Melbourne are injury-riddled, Canterbury first out-enthused the opposition and then outclassed them.
Matt Burton had a much better game at 6, and key new recruits Viliame Kikau and Reed Mahoney both showed their worth. Some of the lesser lights also stood up, with Max King and Ryan Sutton strong up front.
Coach Cameron Ciraldo has the luxury of naming an unchanged team, with Tevita Pangai Junior probably another week away.
We have seen some poor Tigers’ performances in recent years, but last week was arguably the worst. The Tigers couldn’t capitalise on early match-ending concussions for half the Knights’ spine, plus at least 20 minutes of playing with a one-man advantage.
Wests seem to get downfield okay but lack any structure when inside their opponents’ 20m. Much has been written about Luke Brooks being the fall guy for their woes, but he and Adam Doueihi need to shut that out and focus on taking control of this side. Api Koroisau also needs to lift.
In team changes, Shawn Blore and Fonua Pole return from injury with Justin Matamua and Alex Seyfarth dropping out of the 17. Brandon Wakeham comes onto the bench as the utility, with Jake Simpkin suffering a concussion injury last week.
John Bateman has been named in the reserves and could force his way into the 17.
Prediction
The Tigers should improve this weekend. Maybe last week will represent the lowest part of their season.
However, the Bulldogs played with confidence last up and now return to their spiritual home at Belmore.
It’s hard to see anything other than a Canterbury win.
