History beckons for the Redcliffe-based Dolphins as they play their first NRL match in Round 1 against the Sydney Roosters at Suncorp Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 4:05pm AEDT.

The Dolphins have named a strong side as Tonga’s teen sensation Isaiya Katoa makes his NRL debut at five-eighth over Anthony Milford, with skipper Jesse Bromwich and coach Wayne Bennett publicly calling out Milford to improve his attitude.

As there is not much data to look at to determine who needs to fire for the Dolphins, the experienced forward pack filled with premiership winners from the Storm in the Bromwich brothers and Felise Kaufusi will need to lead the way through.

The Roosters will be missing the services of Joseph Manu to injury, but they still have a solid backline. How Joseph Sua’ali’i adapts from the wing and fullback to centre will be interesting. New recruit Brandon Smith is the headline debut in the game as the New Zealand dummy half looks to impress in the Tricolours jersey.

Prediction

This is a tricky game to predict. On paper, the Roosters should get the job done. But has rugby league ever been played on paper? The Roosters were slow starters last year and that could hold them back once again with new recruits and combinations in key positions. And we cannot forget a niche but key stat – Wayne Bennett has never lost to Trent Robinson at Suncorp Stadium.

Bennett has always been a man who has coached his teams to be defensively resilient and have each other’s backs. But there have always been a few key players (Darren Lockyer at Broncos, Jamie Soward at Dragons, Cody Walker at Rabbitohs) who would find a way to create opportunities and score tries.

Who will that man be for the Dolphins?

It has to be Sean O’Sullivan. If he can consistently threaten the Roosters defence and be patient in attack, history could beckon for the Dolphins on their debut.

Dolphins to win 14-8.
