The first week of finals continues tonight when the Penrith Panthers take on the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from the second of the weekend’s qualifying finals from 7:50pm (AEST).

The winner tonight getting a week off and a ticket to the preliminary final; for the loser, a match-up against the victor of tomorrow’s Eels-Knights elimination final awaits.

After a few weeks below full strength, the Panthers team Ivan Cleary named for the final home-and-away round was as imposing as last year’s minor premier have looked in a while. It was a tight start against the second-string Eels, but Penrith was clinical in the second half, running away with a 40-6 victory.

Brian To’o was again huge for the Panthers, running over 200m. Nathan Cleary and Jarome Luai have returned to something like their best, whilst the pack is looking impressive.

In a blow, Tyrone May and Scott Sorensen picked up injuries against the Eels last round and have not been named. Spencer Leniu and Mitch Kenny take their spots on the bench.

Wayne Bennett employed a different strategy to Ivan Cleary, resting the majority of his senior players against the Dragons. It had no impact on the end result, with the Rabbitohs holding on for a 20-16 win.

Much of the discussion this week has centred around whether Souths are a chance without Latrell Mitchell. The Rabbits will be looking to use these doubts as a big motivator. Blake Taaffe keeps the No.1 jersey vacated by the suspended star, although the Panthers are alert to a possible late change.

Adam Reynolds, Alex Johnston, Dane Gagai, Cody Walker, Damien Cook, Thomas Burgess, Jai Arrow and Cameron Murray have all been named to return for the Rabbitohs.

Prediction

The Panthers defeated the Rabbitohs 25-12 only 3 weeks ago, even after falling 12 points behind early.

Nathan Cleary terrorised the back three and I think that will happen again this week.

Penrith may have timed their run perfectly this year, and I think they will win.
