Another bye round. A last-gasp win. A disgusting act from a Giant. Two surprisingly gallant stragglers. A bit of everything, really.

1.Richmond
Last week: 1

Had the bye. Still first, though.

2.Sydney Swans
Last week: 3

Had the bye.

3.West Coast
Last week: 2

First time since 2011 they played without Josh J Kennedy or Jack Darling. It showed. At the risk of sounding a bit reactionary, it was a poor loss, and they’ve got to figure out a way to get their forward line to cope without their two biggest stars.

4.Port Adelaide
Last week: 7

Very good win, and this team has begun to find their spark. Top 4? Maaaaybeeee.

5.Collingwood
Last week: 4

Ugh. They’d be a little frustrated with the nature of that win. Carlton got under their skin, and it took them a long while to feel comfortable. Perhaps they were a little too… complacent.

6.Geelong
Last week: 5

Had the bye.

7.Melbourne
Last week: 6

Statistically, they should have won that footy game. They’d be desperately disappointed with themselves.

8.Hawthorn
Last week: 8

A little sluggish at first, but got the four points in the end. GWS next week is bound to be an intriguing clash: both are in very similar positions.

9.North Melbourne
Last week: 9

They don’t get money from pokies, but evidently they had another stashed away for a ‘get out of jail free card’. Losing that would’ve been bad.

10.GWS Giants
Last week: 10

They won. But they’re about to lose come Tuesday evening. Cameron gone for weeks. He has to be.

11.Essendon
Last week: 11

Brilliant, brilliant win. For once, this league has a genuine surprise win. Still a mammoth hill to climb, though, if this team wants to play in September. Chances are they won’t.

12.Fremantle
Last week: 12

Had the bye. Thank god, my poor young heart needs a break every once in a while.

13.Adelaide
Last week: 13

Had the bye, but still dominated headlines. Seriously, seems the most important news item in South Australia this week is anything containing “The Adelaide Crows + Collective Minds”.

14.Western Bulldogs
Last week: 14

We haven’t seen a close game quite like that for a while, but unfortunately a team always has to lose them. The Bulldogs were that team. A pretty encouraging performance elsewhere, though.

15.Brisbane Lions
Last week: 15

Somewhat like Carlton, it was a loss that didn’t feel like too much of a loss. Andrews the big story, but Hodge’s brilliant game. A shining light in defence in a footy club that needed one of those on Saturday.

16.St Kilda
Last week: 16

Had the bye.

17.Carlton
Last week: 17

Oooh, didn’t do too badly against Collingwood. A twenty-point loss is a much better proposition than the ten-goal loss I predicted, but perhaps the more pressing thing to take from Sunday’s game are the injuries. The last thing the Blues need is an injury crisis.

18.Gold Coast
Last week: 18

They scored a goal in the final quarter! Other than that, a very routine loss. Because that’s apparently becoming a thing for this footy club.
