Melbourne premiership player James Harmes has become the first trade of the 2023 AFL Trade Period, sent to the Western Bulldogs in exchange for a future third-round draft pick.
Harmes played 152 games with the Demons after making his debut as a rookie in 2015, including the Dees’ drought-breaking 2021 grand final win over the Bulldogs.

The 28-year old requested a trade to the Bulldogs just hours before the move officially went through, having fallen out of favour and managing just nine games for the Demons in 2023 despite being contracted for 2024.
“James comes to us with plenty of experience, having played over 150 games and winning a premiership across his nine years in the system,” Bulldogs list manager Sam Power said of Harmes.
“His defensive mindset and ability to cover the ground will add to our midfield group, while he also has the versatility to play in a variety of roles.
“We look forward to welcoming James and his family to VU Whitten Oval in the coming weeks.”
Harmes will add midfield depth to the Bulldogs’ line-up in 2023, complementing the likes of reigning best and fairest winner Marcus Bontempelli, Tom Liberatore, Adam Treloar and Bailey Smith.
