Ash Barty has already achieved a career-best fourth round appearance at the Australian Open. Today she hopes to go at least one better. Barty appears to be in the best form of her life.

She enjoyed a tremendous run in Sydney, defeating a number of higher ranked players on her way to the final, including world No.1 Simona Halep.

Her run through the Australian Open has been just as impressive, not dropping a set on the way to the round of 16.

There were a few tense moments when she was treated for right hip pain after she took the first set against Maria Sakkari. However, Barty appeared to come back stronger and won the second 6-1.

If there is a question mark over her fitness, it was only enlarged yesterday when her and doubles partner, Victoria Azarenka, forfeited their match. Barty insists though that she is good to go.

Maria Sharapova endured an injury interrupted 2018, finishing the season after the US Open. She came into the Australian Open under somewhat of a cloud, retiring hurt in the quarterfinals in Shenzen in early January.

We needn’t have been concerned. Sharapova has been in superb form, losing just three games before taking out the defending champion, Caroline Wozniacki, in three sets in the third round.

Sharapova did hit 46 unforced errors against Wozniacki, compared to 37 winners. Barty will be wanting to make Sharapova hit more balls to take advantage of this.

Prediction
At her best, Sharapova can beat anyone in this field and you get the sense she is approaching her best.

The only head to head clash went to Sharapova in three sets, however it was in Rome on clay last year so there is little to read into that.

Barty is also playing at the top of her game so there is nothing in this. I’m leaning towards Sharapova as I think her power game will just get her over the line.
