Joining the A-League for its inaugural season in 2005/06, Adelaide United surprised many by claiming the first minor premiership of the competition. The club has built its reputation through consistency, regularly making finals appearances in the A-League. Their success came to a halt in the 2009/10 season, where they finished in a disappointing tenth position. Rini Coolen’s appointment as the team’s new manager for 2010/11 helped Adelaide become the first Australian club to climb from the bottom of the table into the top four. However, they were ultimately knocked out in the finals.

Former Barcelona academy mentor Josep Gombau has been appointed Adelaide United coach for the next two seasons, the A-League club announced on Tuesday. Gombau takes over from interim coach Michael Valkanis, who will remain part of the Reds coaching staff. The Spanish-born Gombau will begin with the Reds in July, with his current assistant Pau [...]
Adelaide United must appoint outsider as coach
by Vince Rugari, 17 Apr 2013
Adelaide United might be out of the A-League finals but they’re not out of the headlines. The search for a new coach reached new heights of hilarity last week. In retrospect we can piece together the most recent chapter, which featured the seemingly innocuous announcement that Michael Valkanis would not stand for the head coaching [...]
Who should Adelaide United’s next coach be?
by John Thompson-Mills, 13 Apr 2013
As many as 40 people have indicated an interest in applying for the Adelaide United coaching job, and despite not knowing most of the names, it’s clear to me who should get the job. This week’s dramas with the selection panel have sadly once again highlighted the disunited situation at the Reds. But should we [...]
Adelaide United need Miron Bleiberg
by johnhunt92, 11 Apr 2013
Adelaide United finished their season with more of a whimper than a bang. Their 2-1 loss to Brisbane Roar was a microcosm of a season which held more for the fans. Like the season, the Reds started the match positively before being overrun by experience and class and finally running out of ideas. Mike Valkanas [...]
Brisbane knock Adelaide out of A-League
by Steve Larkin, 8 Apr 2013
Defending champions Brisbane Roar ended Adelaide United’s A-League season with an ominous 2-1 away victory in Sunday’s elimination final. The Roar, with Luke Brattan and Ivan Franjic scoring, set up a semi-final against Western Sydney Wanderers next Friday night. Central Coast Mariners host Melbourne Victory in the other semi-final next Sunday. Brisbane outclassed Adelaide, whose [...]
Valkanis coy on coaching future
by Steve Larkin, 8 Apr 2013
Caretaker Michael Valkanis says he’ll let the dust settle on a wasted A-League season before deciding whether to apply for Adelaide United’s vacant coaching job. Valkanis’ tenure as Adelaide’s interim coach ended on Sunday with a 2-1 elimination final loss to Brisbane Roar. Valkanis posted with two wins, four losses and four draws since taking [...]
Perth Glory left to rue the tale of two penalties
by Mike Tuckerman, 8 Apr 2013
Melbourne Victory should never have been awarded a penalty for Steve Pantelidis’ challenge on Andrew Nabbout. They can thank referee Jarred Gillett for remaining in title contention. Gillett erred in awarding Victory the 90th-minute spot-kick, first missing Nabbout’s handball and then over-reacting to what appeared to be minimal contact from Pantelidis on the Victory substitute. [...]

The A-League Finals continue tonight with a match between in-form Brisbane Roar and the home underdogs Adelaide United. We’ll have live scores and minute-by-minute updates from 5.00pm AEST. Adelaide United must stand up to beat the Roar
by Daniel Catania, 7 Apr 2013
This afternoon Adelaide United host Brisbane Roar at Hindmarsh Stadium in a do or die elimination final match. There is a big question of Adelaide’s commitment going into this game. Will they play with effort and determination? Which player will stand up beside Eugene Galekovic? Adelaide will come into this match with one win in [...]
Port Adelaide shows its petty side in Burgess block [UPDATED]
by John Davidson, 4 Apr 2013
AFL may be the top dog in Australian sport but some of its clubs appear remarkably paranoid and petty, as revealed by the Darren Burgess episode. Burgess, for those who don’t know him, is the current strength and conditioning coach at AFL club Port Adelaide. Previously he worked for Liverpool for two years and the [...]

A-League 2013-2014 draw unveiled, with FTA considerations

Football Federation Australia has pushed the end of the A-League season back even further, with the 2013/14 grand final to be contested on May 4 – the latest finish ever. FFA chief David Gallop announced the draw on Wednesday in Sydney, with the biggest change being an end date that further incurs on the AFL [...]
A-League now football’s backbone: Gallop
by Chris Pike, 22 May 2013
Football Federation Australia (FFA) boss David Gallop does not believe it would be a “disaster” for the Socceroos to not qualify for the 2014 World Cup. With the Socceroos facing World Cup qualifiers in Japan on June 4, followed by hosting Jordan in Melbourne on June 11 and Iraq in Sydney on June 18, Gallop [...]
How does the A-League rate?
by dinoweb, 22 May 2013
It’s a question we all have an opinion on, fans and detractors alike. A much-publicised survey came out a few weeks ago, ranking Australia in the top 20 leagues of the world, but is this reasonable? How does the A-League really stack up against the rest of the world? It’s a question I have asked [...]
In Newcastle, history Jets into fashion
by Joe Gorman, 22 May 2013
Last Friday, Newcastle Jets announced the winning design for its 2013-2014 away kit. There were three kits to choose from but, by popular demand, the winning design was hardly new. In fact, the emerald green and cinnamon jersey is a deliberate reference to the colours worn by Newcastle KB United, an iconic club that played [...]
The mainstream media continues to ignore football
by The Crowd, 22 May 2013
Last week a football match took place in Gosford between an Australian A-League team and a Chinese Super League team. The Telegraph reported the match as follows. “Gosford is now on the map in China, thanks to the AFC Champions League match between the Central Coast Mariners and Guangzhou Evergrande. The Wednesday night game had [...]
What A-League matches should be on Friday night FTA?
by Tony Tannous, 21 May 2013
With the A-League fixtures for next season set to be released tomorrow, featuring a live Friday night free-to-air fixture on SBS2 for the first time, it’s pertinent to ask what type of fixture should kick-off each weekend? Should the Friday night FTA game be used to showcase the competition through a blockbuster clash, such as [...]

by AAP, 20 May 2013
Ernie Merrick, who steered Melbourne Victory to two A-League soccer titles, is the new coach of the Wellington Phoenix. The 60-year-old Scotsman, whose last job was as Hong Kong national coach, was named as the successor to Ricki Herbert by the New Zealand club on Monday. He has signed a two-year deal with an option [...]
Leave your A-League colours at the door for Australia
by Joe Gorman, 20 May 2013
It was a message that reverberated around the room last Thursday night, as fans from around New South Wales met at FFA headquarters in Sydney. Active support for the Socceroos is undergoing a renaissance, one that is free from ties to A-League support bases and club loyalties. Anybody who has paid to watch the Socceroos [...]
Can the Victory reach 50,000 and beyond?
by NUFCMVFC, 17 May 2013
An interesting article by Mathew Windley in the Herald Sun caught my eye today, regarding Melbourne Victory’s plans to grow their support. Windley was interviewing Melbourne Victory CEO Richard Wilson about Melbourne’s ambitions for the future, Wilson asserts an intention to grow the existing 18,432 strong membership (season ticket holders) by over 30 percent over [...]
Learning to love the AFC Champions League via Twitter
by Mike Tuckerman, 17 May 2013
The most enthralling fixture this week was arguably not the FA Cup final or even the Europa League decider, it was a game which took place in Asia hosted by an Australian team. Fans who tuned into the Central Coast Mariners’ absorbing 2-1 home defeat to Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande in the first leg of [...]
