Socceroos
The first Australian national football team was convened in 1922, but it wasn’t until reaching the 1974 World Cup finals that the Socceroos came to prominence. After switching to the Asian Football Confederation in 2005, the Socceroos confirmed their second World Cup finals appearance the same year.
A respectable second round finish at the World Cup in 2006 was followed by a less impressive Asian Cup debut. However, the Socceroos look set to coast through Asian qualifying to book a place at South Africa 2010. The term “Socceroos” was coined by journalist Tony Horstead in 1967.

Fox Sports are claiming a world exclusive with Mark Viduka appearing on Fox Sports’ Hyundai Matchday Saturday. Despite the Matchday Saturday tag, this week the show airs on Friday night as a live Grand Final Preview Special.
