Socceroos

The Socceroos’ history stems from the first Australian national football team which was convened in 1922. The nickname ‘Socceroos’ was coined by jouranlist Tony Horstead in 1967. But it wasn’t until reaching the 1974 World Cup finals that the Socceroos came to prominence. After switching to the Asian Football Confederation in 2005, the Socceroos confirmed their second World Cup finals appearance the same year.

A respectable second round finish at the World Cup in 2006 was followed by a less impressive Asian Cup debut. With an experienced squad under the instruction of Dutch minder Pim Verbeek, expectations were high for the Socceroos at World Cup 2010, however the torunament began disastrously, going down 4-0 to Germany, and the Socceroos were bundled out in the first round.

Under new coach Holger Osieck, the team appears to have turned over a new leaf, reaching the Asian Cup 2011 final, and the outlook is once again positive as the nation builds toward Brazil in 2014, with the Socceroos currently engaged in the fourth and final round of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the Asian confederation.

Are we supporting the Soccerwhos?

These next few weeks are crucial for the Australian men’s national football team and their desperate need to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Desperate because not qualifying would be a huge blow for the FFA and football in this country and a big win for the enemies of reason. Financially you’d [...]

Leave your A-League colours at the door
 for Australia

by , 20 May 2013

It was a message that reverberated around the room last Thursday night, as fans from around New South Wales met at FFA headquarters in Sydney. Active support for the Socceroos is undergoing a renaissance, one that is free from ties to A-League support bases and club loyalties.

Japan will fear Socceroos says North

by , 8 May 2013

Defender Jade North admits the Socceroos have their back against the wall as they eye a World Cup berth but says it’s Asian heavyweights Japan who’ll be fearful heading into their key clash next month. A 12-man Australian-based squad are in training on the Central Coast this week as the Socceroos begin preparations for their [...]

Tim Cahill’s blunt words to spur on young tyros

by , 8 May 2013

Tim Cahill’s declaration that too much inexperience in the Socceroos side has left them with an uphill battle to Brazil will fuel the squad’s tyros to succeed, Central Coast young gun Trent Sainsbury says. After being held to a 2-2 draw by Oman in Sydney in March the Socceroos are now left in third place [...]

Road to Brazil littered with potholes for Socceroos

Road to Brazil littered with potholes for Socceroos

Only one month to go until June’s three vital World Cup qualifiers for the Socceroos and already my fingernails are down to stubs. It’s tough to know what we ought to make of Australia’s chances in this group. The top two get a direct place at Brazil 2014. We currently sit in third place, just [...]

Socceroos commence preparations for Japan

by , 7 May 2013

The Socceroos have commenced preparations for next month’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Asian heavyweights Japan as they attempt to rebound from their poor showing against Oman. Twelve Australian-based players, including Socceroos skipper Lucas Neill, were on Monday assembling in Gosford for a five-day training camp ahead of the June 4 clash in Saitama, Japan. [...]

Relegation hurts, but life can hurt you more

Relegation hurts, but life can hurt you more

by , 3 May 2013

One day A-League fans will know the pain of relegation, which seems to be a curious obsession of the oft-bewildering Asian Football Confederation. The AFC continues to insist that promotion and relegation are key components of leagues across Asia, regardless of whether multi-divisional leagues are even plausible in certain countries. Coming from an organisation which [...]

Confronting A-League’s challenges

by , 30 Apr 2013

What an A-League season it has been. Ratings up, crowds up, net hits up, media coverage up. Next year live free-to-air broadcasting of the A-League will commence, with Socceroo World Cup qualifiers and A-League finals on a one hour delay.  My hope/expectation/desire is the A-League over this time will establish itself as the clear third [...]

From Highbury to Parramatta: a Wanderers’ fan’s journey

by , 29 Apr 2013

The criticism of loyalty in sports has usually been about players not honouring the full term of their contract, usually because they are enticed to another club for more money, more prestige or greater chances of success and winning trophies. Nowadays, a football player will rarely stay with the same team all their professional life, [...]

It’s time David Gallop faced some uncomfortable questions

by , 29 Apr 2013

Winning a World Cup bid is difficult enough without the endemic corruption in football, so the fact that a $462,000 Football Federation Australia donation has allegedly been stolen is hardly stunning news. It’s even less of a surprise that the man who allegedly stole it is Trinidad and Tobago’s outgoing security minister Jack Warner. Warner’s [...]
