With inspirational captain Danny Buderus leaving the Newcastle Knights at the end of season 2008, the days when Buderus and Andrew Johns would lead the Knights to victory are now over. A team effort from 2009 onwards is now required to steer Newcastle back to its glory days when it won two premierships inside five NRL seasons in 1997 and 2001. The Knights will be boosted by the installation of coaching legend Wayne Bennett in 2012, appointed by new club owner and mining magnate Nathan Tinkler.

Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett praised his team for the manner of their performance against Canterbury as the Knights ended a poor run of form with a 44-8 victory on Sunday. The Knights were far from the side capitulated in the second half against Canberra last week in an almost flawless display that also impressed Bulldogs [...]

If sport’s a drug, then hook me up
by Jay Sullivan, 16 May 2013
Sometimes I need to turn my brain off. I think too much and most of this thinking is non-productive to the point of being counter-productive. I long for knowledge and read, view and study, with some hope of understanding – but trying to do this all the time can make you crazy. So every week, [...]

by Joe Barton, 30 Apr 2013
Richie Fa’aoso’s NRL season hangs in the balance, with Manly yet to decide on whether to fight the prop’s 10-game ban for two dangerous throw tackles on South Sydney’s Greg Inglis. Fa’aoso upended Inglis in two ugly incidents during Friday’s spiteful contest at Brookvale Oval, and was hit with grade-two and grade-three dangerous throw charges [...]

Newcastle vs Penrith: Disgraceful
by MG Burbank, 14 Apr 2013
If we ever needed Exhibit A in the case against the “attack” being employed by many of the teams in season 2013, last night’s Knights-Panthers game couldn’t have been more timely. This was pathetic. Yes, it must be conceded that neither of these teams are stocked full of attacking flair and brilliance, but Penrith’s play [...]
Buderus out of NRL for six to eight weeks
by James MacSmith, 14 Apr 2013
Newcastle coach Wayne Bennett insists the decorated career of Danny Buderus isn’t over despite news that the Knights hooker will be forced to undergo further surgery on his troublesome back. Ryan O’Connell and Brett McKay have, unbelievably, been asked back to do another episode of The Cheap Seats Podcast. In episode four, the lads discuss Ryano’s breakfast habits, Small Man Syndrome and favourite Spice Girl, while Brett outs a prominent Australian athlete as a ‘knob’. Episode four talking points: • David Warner’s Twitter rant; • [...]
STEVE TURNER: Only one Origin newcomer for the marauding Maroons
by Steve Turner, 21 May 2013
Hard-working Souths back-rower Chris McQueen has been touted as a frontline candidate for the Queensland Origin team and I think he is cherry ripe for a spot on the Maroons’ bench. At 25, Chris lays claim to being the most improved player in the NRL and I feel he has the game to really make [...]
Whittling down the Blues contenders for State of Origin I
by Luke Doherty, 21 May 2013
Around 6,367 players are currently in contention to play for NSW in State of Origin one, but unfortunately for coach Laurie Daley, he must whittle that number down to a more manageable 17 or 18 on Sunday. Just about anyone who turns in a good game now and has decided to pick New South Wales [...]
Time for the NRL to introduce silver point
by Brendan Bradford, 21 May 2013
After the Storm and Sea Eagles played out a 10-all draw at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Monday night, Glenn Stewart and Cam Smith said it was probably a fair result. So did Nathan Hindmarsh on the Matty Johns show afterwards. They’re all wrong. Such a great spectacle deserves a winner and the old saying [...]
A Blues Origin jumper for everyone? Why not
by Geoff Koop, 21 May 2013
It seems like every Josh, Willie and Blake has a chance at making the NSW origin team for game one and frankly I’m sick of it. As much as I love seeing the Blues selectors squirm at the thought of trying to stop the Queensland juggernaut, I also enjoyed the tightness of last year’s series. [...]
Dugan for Origin? Lay off the Breezers!
by Ryan O'Connell, 21 May 2013
After Josh Dugan’s triumphant return to rugby league on Saturday night for the St George Illawarra Dragons, there has been talk of the fullback being picked for the NSW Blues in the upcoming State of Origin series. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and if people truly believe Dugan should return to the highest level [...]
NRL golden point must get the flick
by Curtis Woodward, 21 May 2013
A famous rivalry added another chapter on Monday night as the Melbourne Storm and the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles battled to a 10-all draw at AAMI Park. The Storm headed into half-time down by eight points and staring down the barrel of three losses on the trot. Craig Bellamy’s men were struggling and would need to [...]
Cronulla Sharks fighting a war they can’t win
by turbodewd, 21 May 2013
The Great War, Vietnam, the Super League war – these were nasty wars that were prolonged and had many casualties. They remind us that a long war is to be avoided at all costs and winning one is very, very costly. Today Cronulla are engaged in a war with ASADA. This is becoming a long [...]
Where were you when sport sold its soul?
by Elisha Pearce, 21 May 2013
After you’ve hit snooze a couple of times on Monday morning, you check your phone and see how many times you won on the weekend. Not your team – your betting account, on your phone. Then you go to work and throw back and forth with your mates about what you need to do to [...]
Storm’s Duffie ruled out for NRL season
by Sam Lienert, 21 May 2013
Melbourne’s luckless winger Matt Duffie will miss the rest of the NRL season with a knee injury. In an added blow, Duffie, who missed last year’s premiership win with a major shoulder injury, also needs another shoulder reconstruction. Duffie was returning from a shoulder dislocation in the NSW Cup on Saturday. But just minutes into [...]
