Mystery over Bullets continues

The fate of the Brisbane Bullets is in the hands of owner Eddy Groves who has 10 days before handing back his NBL licence.

NBL boss Chuck Harmison said today all offers for the Bullets’ licence would now have go directly through Groves after an attempt by a mystery man to secure ownership of the three-time champions came up empty this week.

Rumours this week linked highly successful Brisbane businesswoman Sarina Russo and hair dressing giant Steve “Stefan” Ackerie with rescue bids.

Brisbane basketball identity Brian Stephenson is another name that continually comes up and there’s been speculation he could have the necessary financial backing to launch an 11th hour bid to save the club.

But Groves is the only person who knows if the Bullets can survive and he is not an easy man to contact.

It’s understood there could be a meeting tomorrow involving Groves and a potential new owner that could shed some light as to whether there is any light at the end of a dark tunnel.

Harmison said on Tuesday he was “quietly confident” of Brisbane being around next season and even after the mystery man’s demise he was still hopeful today.

“The only thing I will say today is that everything now is going through Eddy Groves,” said Harmison.

“Eddy owns the licence and everything is Eddy’s call.

“I still have the same confidence I had earlier in the week.”

Brisbane fans won’t have to wait much longer to learn if they have a team, with Groves schedule to hand over the licence at the end of the month if he hasn’t found a new owner.
