NBL finally makes an appearance

Having flown under the radar for the first two months of their season, the NBL is finally about to pop up on Australian television screens.

The absence of any television coverage so far has exacerbated what has been one of the most low-key season starts imaginable for Australia’s premier basketball competition.

The league’s negotiations with pay television broadcaster Foxtel were delayed by a review in the off-season which will lead to a complete overhaul of the competition next season.

The NBL was also hit by the folding of powerhouse clubs Sydney Kings and Brisbane Bullets, along with the Singapore Slingers, before the season began.

Those factors meant the broadcaster agreed to show only 14 home and away games, with the first of those to be next Wednesday night’s clash between Townsville and Sydney Spirit.

A live game will be screened every Wednesday night for the rest of the season.

Every club except for Perth will have at least one home game shown, although the Spirit’s only home game on television will not be until January 28 next year.

In addition, Maori TV’s coverage of four New Zealand Breakers’ home games – against South Dragons, Perth, Townsville and Sydney – will be re-broadcast by Foxtel.
