Lleyton Hewitt advanced to the third round at Wimbledon with a commanding straight-sets win over fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro on Thursday.

The Australian’s superior grasscourt game outshone the Argentine 6-3 7-5 7-5 in two hours and 32 minutes.

World No.56 Hewitt, working his way back from hip surgery last year, ended an 11-match losing streak against players ranked in the world’s top five with this victory.

He broke del Potro in the sixth game of the match and converted the second of three set points with an ace.

Hewitt was clearly pumped as he broke his opponent at 5-5 in the second set and a smash deep into del Potro’s backhand court sealed a 2-0 advantage for the 2002 champion.

Looking to wrap up the match on Centre Court early, Hewitt broke del Potro in the opening game of the third set.

While serving for the match however, Hewitt was broken, but broke back immediately and then held serve for victory.

Hewitt next faces the winner of the second-round match between German pair Philipp Petzschner and Mischa Zverev.
