Wimbledon: Some fight in the old legs yet

This year’s men’s round of 16 at Wimbledon boasts three players in their thirties: Tommy Haas, Radek Stepanek and Ivo Karlovic. Joining them are two veterans in Lleyton Hewitt and Juan Carlos Ferrero, both formerly ranked number one and now ranked outside the top 50.

Between them, they have knocked off some of the most promising young players in Juan Martin Del Potro, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic, all ranked 13th or higher in the world, showing that experience counts for something against hard-hitting youthful exuberance.

31-year old Haas outlasted Cilic, a man 11 years his junior, over two days in the longest match of the tournament so far, and fellow old hand Radek Stepanek is coming off back-to-back five set victories over younger opponents.

Juan Carlos Ferrero has repaid his wildcard entry with some vintage performances, including a five-set win over tenth seed Fernando Gonzalez, a semi-finalist at Roland Garros earlier this year.

Lleyton Hewitt, a former champion at the All England Club, has shown encouraging consistency in his campaign so far as he looks to re-enter the top 20.

He is one of only two players, the other being Tomas Berdych, who has not dropped a set so far in the tournament.
