A 1970s rivalry between two cricketing icons will be revived when Dennis Lillee coaches an All-Star team against an Australian XI in an exhibition match on November 22.

Former Test world record-holder Lillee said on Wednesday he was keen to lock horns at the Gabba with his former Test skipper Greg Chappell, who will coach the national side.

Pace great Lillee’s All-Star Twenty20 team boasts some of the game’s biggest names, including retired quartet Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden, Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne, who is captain.

Lillee, 60, is also regarded as one of cricket’s leading fast-bowling coaches.

The WACA president said he backed his record against Chappell, a former India coach who now heads Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence.

“Seeing the win-loss ratio of Western Australia versus Queensland when we played was highly WA’s way, I will draw on that experience,” Lillee said.

Chappell said he expected to have a young side at his disposal for the game, which comes four days before the first Test against the West Indies.

“That will certainly give cricket fans a taste of what’s to come for Australian cricket over the next few years,” he said.

“I’ve coached Australia A before, back in the early 90s when they were part of the triangular series, but it will be my first time coaching an Australian XI team.

“It was always good fun playing with and against Dennis and I’m looking forward to this opportunity to get one back against him.”
