Howard faces ICC moment of truth

John Howard faces his moment of truth on Wednesday in his bid to be appointed the next vice-president of the International Cricket Council.

The former prime minister is the joint nominee for the boards of Cricket Australia and Cricket New Zealand.

Howard needs votes from seven of the 10 Test-playing nations to ensure he is elected to the position.

But what was supposed to be a formality has become uncertain, as Zimbabwe and South Africa have questioned his suitability for the role given his hardline stance against Zimbabwe’s Mugabe regime during his time as prime minister.

If Howard’s nomination is ratified at a meeting of the ICC’s member nations in Singapore he will assume the position of vice-president as deputy behind India’s Sharad Pawar.

Howard would serve as vice-president for two years before assuming the top job in 2012.
