The Festival of Perth Racing has kicked off, with the $1 million Group One Railway Stakes. With plenty of good racing in the West over the next two weeks (including the G2 Winterbottom and the G1 Kingston Town Classic), it is worth taking a closer look at the Ascot track.

It has a circumference of 2,022 metres and a relatively short straight (albeit on a slight incline) of 294m.

Perth is blessed with good weather year-round and with just two metropolitan tracks and a relatively small horse population it will be interesting to see how ‘true’ the form is.

Here are the results for the first four horses in the market (based on best tote prices) for approximately 1500 Ascot races over the last five years:

Favourite -three per cent profit on turnover.
Second Fave -16 per cent POT
Third Fave -15 per cent POT
Fourth Fave -10 per cent POT

So -six per cent overall for the first four favourites which is far better than the -13 per cent across all tracks during this time. Although the performance of the favourite is quite strong, the fact that second and third favourites performed poorly means you shouldn’t focus exclusively on horses that are in the market.

Ascot experience appears to be relatively important. Horses that have never raced there before return 10 per cent loss on turnover, while those that have had at least one start lose just three per cent.

There are some other points worth noting:
• There were no major standout stats in terms of distances
• Barriers 1 and 2 produce 7 per cent POT combined
• There were very few races on affected ground (since Ascot is Perth’s summer track)
• The best performing jockeys were Alan Kennedy, Brad Parnham. Pat Carbery, Peter Hall, Paul, Harvey, Peter Knuckey, Shaun O’Donnell and Steven Parnham
• The best performing Ascot trainers were Adam Durrant, Daniel Morton and Neville Parnham.
