Two-time finalist Pat Rafter believes that Bernard Tomic is a legitimate chance of taking down Novak Djokovic in their Wimbledon quarter-final on Wednesday.
Davis Cup captain Rafter had not expected the 18-year-old to produce his historic run from qualifying to the final eight at the All England Club this year.
But after watching him only drop two sets in four rounds at Wimbledon, the two-time US Open champion has become a much bigger believer.
“He is a kid that you never write off, he is a on a big streak and I give him a very good chance,” Rafter said.
“Nothing would surprise me.”
Rafter said that Tomic had shown composure beyond the grasp of most teenagers in south-west London in the past week and a half.
“The kid is tough in the head. He knows how to find a way,” Rafter said.
“He backs himself where a lot of kids wouldn’t.
“I know I wouldn’t have (at his age) but this fellow believes in himself and believes he can win every match, every time he steps out onto the court.
“Grass is his best surface, it is not Djokovic’s best surface.
“Djokovic is the best player in the world this year but I think it will be a very good and very close match.”
