Shane Perkins believes he’s finally got the formula right in time for next week’s track cycling world championships after struggling to juggle three events.

With the team sprint added last year to his keirin and sprint commitments, he admits his individual events suffered.

But the defending keirin world champion says a different training routine has him ready to tackle the treble in Melbourne next week.

“Riding all three events is something different,” Perkins said on Friday.

“I haven’t been doing the team sprint for the last few years, we’ve had to change a few things in training.

“It’s taken a little bit away in the last year from my sprint and keirin performances, but things are starting to step up pretty well now.

“I’m confident next week I can put the performances in in all three events.”

The team sprint trio of Perkins, Matthew Glaetzer and Scott Sunderland set an Australian record at the World Cup meeting in Kazakhstan last year as they edge closer to the world’s best.

Perkins is confident they’ve made enough progress to challenge the formidable defending champions from Germany, as well as the powerful French and British.

“I think we have got a really competitive team this year,” Perkins said.

“I think we would be silly if we said that we can’t win because I think we could definitely be a gold medal-winning team.”

Perkins had modest results at the World Cup meeting in London last month when he was in the middle of a heavy training phase, finishing 13th in the sprint, fourth in the team sprint and not competing in the keirin.

He says his form is now coming together, setting personal bests at training, both on the bike and in the gym.

“In the sprint I will be looking at a podium or better and in the keirin, I would love to win another world title,” he said.

Mitchell Mulhern’s Olympic hopes came to an end on Friday when he was cut from Australia’s endurance squad for the world titles.
