'I've just won a stage of the Tour de France, mate!': Hindley grabs yellow jersey as Aussie blows Tour apart
Australia's Jai Hindley has said he is "lost for words" after a shock stage victory at the Tour de France earned him the leader's…
Social media has become such a huge part of sports coverage in recent times. In particular, Twitter has become a personal favourite of cyclists and cycling followers.
As such, throughout the Tour de France this year, I will be covering some of the Twitter comments of the peleton’s more charismatic members, in particular our Aussie favourites.
This should give you some insight into the ups and downs of the Tour and a little more knowledge on the athletes’ thoughts as they tackle the most difficult race in the world.
You just gotta love it to be Fabian’s teammate!! Its simply an honour to ride with him and be friends with him! What a legend he is!!
— Jens Voigt (@thejensie) June 30, 2012
Amen to that, Jensie. And kudos on beginning another Tour de France at 40 years of age. What a champ. Although, he might need some help from his fans in regards to this…
Mmmhh, Puuhh anybody else thinks i need to pack my suitcase a little more organised??? yfrog.com/nzmefclj
— Jens Voigt (@thejensie) June 30, 2012
And I’m happy with my time. Apparently there’s still some of the time trialist left! 😉 Or it was the 400gr of steak the evening be4… 😛
— Marcel Kittel (@marcelkittel) June 30, 2012
TT time for prologue: 7:34 over 6.4km; Number of Tour de France starts: 1; Having a crack at Alberto Contador’s “steakgate” doping scandal: Priceless. Well played, Marcel!
@colred @fish_styx @cyclingtips ok boys. Inside info… Finish looks to be (and probably is) designed for Gilbert tomorrow…
— Koen de Kort (@koendekort) June 30, 2012
Koen de Kort is a bit too focused on tonight’s stage rather than his TT performance.
Just said goodbye to my fresh feeling legs. This is the last few hrs they’re gonna feel good for the next 4 weeks! #nomorestairsforme!
— STUART O’GRADY (@StueyOG) June 30, 2012
Stuey starting to show his age somewhat. Still the workhorse of the Orica-GreenEDGE team.
Just in case nobody noticed, @ryder_hesjedal was 14th. He was 17th in the Giro prologue.
— David Millar (@millarmind) June 30, 2012
David Millar does make a good point here. Hesjedal is very much the darkhorse.
Prologues hurt! http://app.strava.com/rides/liège-walloon-region-belgium-12096088?ref=1MT1yaWRlX3NoYXJlOzI9dHdpdHRlcjs0PTE4NjUyMg%3D%3D

Laurens Ten Dam sharing his Strava file on Twitter. 6.4km can’t hurt that much, can it?
Just dumped it in the warm up!! Back wheel slid out. Going to run the road tires. All good just a bit of skin. twitter.com/bdlancaster/st…
— Brett Lancaster (@bdlancaster) June 30, 2012
Brett Lancaster actually took a tumble before destroying the 6.4km course to finish 6th. Thankfully, it wasn’t too serious and he managed a great result:
One position better than the giro prologue with 6th. Think I might start training for prologues again! Very happy with my result.

Todays: Poo in my pants moment, Go’s to Peter Sagan- steephill.tv/players/youtub…Good save but!
— Mark Renshaw (@Mark_Renshaw) June 30, 2012
Great one here from Renshaw. What a save by Sagan! Not surprised that Renshaw wasn’t boasting about finishing 159th on the day.
Australia, I hope you’ve stocked up on some sleep, it’s Tour de France time!
— Simon Gerrans (@simongerrans) June 30, 2012
Some wise advice by Gerro that I’ve conveniently ignored.
Nice start to TDF, ride of day goes to @chrisfroome who forgot to take out nose plugs… #chapeau
— Richie Porte (@richie_porte) June 30, 2012
Richie Porte having a dig at his British teammate Chris Froome.
The Tour has started…Well, everyone knows that…. Not great a start but not bad. The real stuff starts tomorrow. Nice ride Tejay!
— Cadel Evans (@CadelOfficial) June 30, 2012
Cadel not overly happy with his prologue result (despite it being his best ever at a Tour prologue). Still, you can’t win the race after 6.4km…
3 weeks of suffering physically, mentally & emotionally starts today. But the image of Champs Élysées is the most beautiful target in sport.
— Mark Cavendish (@MarkCavendish) June 30, 2012
For those of you doubting whether Mark Cavendish would race all the way through to Paris, I rest my case…
What a prolog….i am so HAPPY and proud.thanks for all the support and finger crossing.tomorrow gona defend it with the strong @rsnt team.
— Fabian cancellara (@f_cancellara) June 30, 2012
Fabian’s English might not be that flash but he certainly was on the stage. What a ride by the champ. Just goes to show that no matter how hard you hit the deck, you can always pick yourself back up, dust yourself off and become a winner again.
