Dear Demi has won the 2012 Crown Oaks, beating home favourite Zydeco as both stormed over the field from the back.

The race was run at a fast tempo, with Ireland’s Teardrop, Finnegan Beginegan and Transonic pushing forward, but at the home turn only Gondokoro could go with the pace, as the leaders failed to stay the trip.

Third placed Summerbliss chased home well to finish third in just her third career start, giving her plenty of upside for her future.

Fourth was Maraatib.

Winning jockey Jim Cassidy was delighted to make amends for his last start problems.

“We had no luck at Caulfield in the Wakeful, but I promised Clarry Conners (trainer) and John Singleton (owner) that I’d turn it around for them”.

John Singleton told reporters that Cassidy had been sacked for his performance in the Wakeful, and was set to replace him with jockey Nash Rawiller – but Rawiller was suspended for the meeting by stewards following a careless riding charge.

1st DEAR DEMI – Jim Cassidy – I had to turn it around because we didn’t have much luck the other day but I was more concerned about today. Today was Oaks day and it was the one we had to win. We met the other filly [Zydeco] back at level weights and not a bad ride helped. I got on the back of Macca [Kerrin McEvoy – Zydeco], he dragged me into the race and I arrived at the 200 just cuddling her. We’d done nothing.

2nd ZYDECO – Kerrin McEvoy – She ran well. I was a little bit worried at the 500 because I wasn’t sitting on as much horse as I was in the Wakeful, she wasn’t towing me through her gears, so she’s done a fantastic job, all this in one preparation. She’s only going to get better.

3rd SUMMERBLISS – Craig Williams – She went fantastic. Credit to Mick Kent, she went great. The first two over the line are the class but I loved the way she galloped home having her third every race start.

4th MARAATIB – Michael Walker – Good run. She probably ran to her top. She may have got a length to a length and a half closer if Craig Newitt’s horse didn’t stop and come back into her face but she ran good.

5th ALZORA Nicholas Hall She ran to about her level. Good effort.

6th TRANSONIC Mark Zahra She ran really well. She tries her heart out but it was probably a bit too far for her.

7th GONDOKORO (NZ) Rhys McLeod Not a bad run. I think she’ll be a better horse next time in.

8th TEN BLACK Luke Nolen Good staying effort. I think she’s going to be a lovely filly in six months time.

9th ZUCCOTTO Hugh Bowman Not quite strong enough yet.

10th LA ZUMA Corey Brown It came four, six months too early for her.

11th TYANNA Michael Rodd She just didn’t have the stamina.

12th KATE (NZ) James McDonald She’s had enough and is ready for the paddock.

13th IRELAND’S TEARDROP Vlad Duric Had to do too much work from the draw.

14th MAMA’S CHOICE Damien Oliver No comment.

Last FINNEGAN BEGINEGAN Craig Newitt Not good enough.
