Annette Edmondson has pipped London Olympics room-mate Amy Cure to defend her 3000m individual pursuit crown at the Australian track cycling championships in Sydney.

Edmondson, who won bronze in the women’s omnium at the London Games, clinched her 14th national track title on Thursday night in a time of 3 minutes, 30.722 seconds.

The Dunc Gray Velodrome’s timing system was unable to separate Edmondson and Cure (3:32.088) with three laps to go, but the South Australian pulled ahead when it mattered.

“The world championships are only three weeks away, so this is a major event for all of us,” Edmondson said.

“This was one that I was definitely going after.

“It was a bit strange having her (Cure) on the other side as I’m used to being on her side, listening to music before the race.

“So it’s quite difficult to go from teammates in training and then to racing each other the next day, but that’s how it is.”

The South Australian quartet of Luke Davison, Alex Edmondson, Glenn O’Shea and Miles Scotson won the team pursuit victory in a time of 3:59.977.

South Australia’s Josh Harrison, Tom Kaesler, Alex Porter and Callum Scotson also took out the under-19 men’s team pursuit.

In the women’s sprint, the top three qualifiers in Stephanie Morton, Kaarle McCulloch and Taylah Jennings progressed to the second round.

Men’s sprint favourites Matthew Glaetzer and Scott Sunderland also progressed to round two, but defending champion Alex Bird was knocked out by fellow Canberran Nathan Hart.
