Its day three at the Cheltenham Festival, and while quality may have been better in days one and two, there’s still good racing to look forward to. Heres a preview of the two big races of the day:

The Ryanair Chase – Race 3 – 1:40am AEDT:

This race is a recent enough addition created for horses who are not quick enough for the Queen Mother Champion Chase over two miles and who have not got the stamina for the Gold Cup at thee miles. Hence the two and a half mile distance.

The favourite First Lieutenant hasn’t been winning of late, losing his last four races but has form at the festival, coming second in the RSA Chase last year and winning a novice hurdle the year before that.

I like Cue Card, he came second last year to Sprinter Sacre in the Arkle. He looks suited to this distance. Others to consider include previous winner Albertas Run, probably a bit old now at 12 years and last year’s winner Riverside Theatre who wants good ground.

The World Hurdle – Race 4 – 2:20am AEDT:

This is for three mile hurdlers and has been dominated by Big Bucks in recent years. His absence this year opens up this race.

The Nicky Henderson trained Oscar Whisky is the one to beat. He came second to Reve De Sivola in Cheltenham last January but that was on heavy ground, he’ll appreciate the better ground conditions now. Reve De Sivola is a live contender, he’s won his last two races, but I just see Oscar Whisky getting the better of him.

Bog Warrior has won his last three races but all his racing is on heavy or soft so its hard to know how well he’ll be suited to the better ground conditions here.
