As the jump season comes to an end European racing looks to the flat and this Saturdays 2000 Newmarket Guineas. Here we’ll get a first look at the classic generation at Group 1 level.

The 2000 Guineas (Sunday 12.50am Australian time)

Ran over the Rowley mile this race is for 3 year old colt & fillies, although the fillies normally wait for the 1000 guineas.

Previous winners of this race include equine legends like Brigadier Gerard, Sea the Stars and Frankel. This years renewal seems to be a match up between Dawn Approach and Toronado.

Dawn Approach comes into this as an unbeaten 2 year old winning Group 1’s the National Stakes and the Dewhurst. About a month ago his trainer Jim Bolger reported that the horse had developed into a magnificent horse over the northern hemisphere winter prompting bookies to slash his price.

There is plenty of speed on his dams side, his dam sire Phone Trick was a high class American sprinter and sire of sprinters. His sire New Approach is a Epson Derby(2400m) and Irish Champion stakes(2000m) winner.

Dawn Approach has good turn of foot and is sure to make an impact in top European mile and middle distance Group 1s this year. Godolphin will hope so, they need this win after a crushing couple of weeks of drug scandals.

Toronado looked very impressive in his last outing in the Group 3 Craven stakes, he’s also unbeaten although he’s yet to win at Group 1 level.

His jockey Richard Hughes has claimed he’s the best horse he’s ever sat on, high praise considering he’s ridden wonder miler Canford Cliffs in recent years, stand up and take notice.

Aidan O’Brien has a great record in this race with six wins so some of his horses are worth considering, his jockey son Joseph has opted for Cristoforo Colombo who they expect to run well on the better ground.

Another of O’Brien’s worth mentioning is Breeders Cup juvenile winner George Vancouver, the forgotten horse of the race. if he runs to this form he’ll be up there. Its Dawn Approach for me with Toronado and George Vancouver fighting it out for 2nd.
