Nathan Earle of Huon Genesys took out victory in stage two at the Tour of Toowoomba, coming home ahead of Matt Clark (CHM) and teammate Jack Haig. The win puts Earle in the overall leader’s jersey.
After a hard day in the saddle yesterday, stage one winner Will Walker of Drapac came home in a credible 13th.
It was a day for those who like to climb, with seven climbs over the stage. The fifth and sixth climbs were over nine percent gradient, testing riders as they pushed forward to the finish line in the Bunya Mountains.
The stage started quickly and a breakaway consisting of Craig Evers (RFG), Neil Van Der Ploeg (STR), Oliver Martin (Team Polygon) and Dylan Newbery (DEM) established themselves off the front.
The breakaway managed a margin of two minutes and 40 seconds at one stage and with 30km to race, they still had a two min 10 lead.
They were caught with about 25km still to race.
The final kilometres saw brilliant racing with Nathan Earle, Ben Dyball and Matt Clark take the lead up the Bunya.
Haig attempted to bridge to them with (The Roar’s own) Adam Semple (SGR) and Brodie Talbot (RKG) not far behind.
Earle took the win, crossing the finish line in 3hr06:50, to give Huon Genesys their first stage win for the Tour of Toowoomba.
If riders thought the Tasmanian outfit were off their game this weekend, they were quickly put back in their place.
With four riders finishing today in the top ten, and four in the top ten for overall placings, Huon Genesys also finished the day with the race leader’s jersey and the king of the mountains jersey, just to remind us all of their dominance so far in the NRS.
Saturday’s stage is a split stage, with a 27km Team Time Trial in the morning and a 114km road race from Greenmount to Glenvale.
