Wallabies lose Tomane with toe injury

The Wallabies injury-hampered wing stocks have taken another hit with Brumbies flyer Joe Tomane suffering a broken toe.

Tomane will be sidelined for at least two weeks and in-form Queensland winger Luke Morahan has been rushed into Australia’s squad for the three-Test series against the British and Irish Lions.

It’s another gut-wrenching blow for the former Melbourne and Gold Coast NRL winger who shone in his Wallabies debut 12 months ago against Scotland but then injured his ankle in training just days later.

An MRI scan on Tuesday detected a small fracture in his toe after injuring it at training and he joins Digby Ioane in rehab.

Tomane had been on track to start against the Lions on Saturday week as coach Robbie Deans earlier revealed first-choice winger Ioane was no certainty to return from knee surgery in time for the first Test.

The only other specialist winger in the initial 31-man squad, Nick Cummins, has also been battling to overcome a leg injury.

If both Tomane and Ioane are sidelined then code-hopper Israel Folau becomes even more of a certainty to start at Suncorp Stadium, either at wing or fullback.

Morahan’s Wallabies recall comes after he produced a career-best game for the Reds in their 22-12 loss to the Lions on Saturday night, highlighted by a dazzling solo 75m try and two try-saving tackles.
