Red Tracer's Tiara win headlines weekend of racing

It was a great day of racing all round at Eagle Farm and Flemington, especially considering we are in the middle of winter.

The only dampener of the day was the fact that Randwick was abandoned after three races due to consistent heavy rain.

The rain not only affected the races but also prevented Chris Waller from surpassing the great TJ Smith and Gai Waterhouse’s record for the most Sydney metropolitan winners in the one season.

Although this disappointment didn’t last too long, with Waller’s mare Red Tracer taking out the final Group 1 of the season, the Tattersalls’ Tiara.

In my article on Friday I spruiked the chances of the consistent mare Red Tracer and boy did she deliver.

The race went exactly to plan – she jumped well and Nash Rawiller got her into a great position sitting just off the pace.

The mare then burnt her rivals with a strong turn off foot over the final 200m. This takes Chris Waller’s Group 1 tally to nine for the season.

The race favourite Streama finished a gallant second but looked to be disadvantaged from her inside draw, while Peter Moody’s Floria continued her consistent form by finishing in the places once again.

The eye-catching run of the race was She’s Clean who was hitting the line nice and strongly. This mare has been progressing nicely through the ranks and has a big future ahead of her.

The ultra consistent mare Fire Up Fifi, won her 11th race from 29 starts in the listed Centenary Classic.

It was great ride from Damian Browne who took up the initiative by taking the lead early on and fighting off Conservatorium to the line.

Someday ran a disappointing third after a shocking ride from Michael Cahill.

Fire Up Fifi is a very versatile mare and I’d like to see Robert Heathcote give her a spell before finding her a nice race in the spring over 1400-1600m.

In the other black type races of the day, Howmuchdoyouloveme, who has found some form of late, beat home River Lad in the WJ Healy Stakes.

This gave Nash Rawiller his secnd winner of the day while Rialya at $21 took out the Tattersalls’ Cup from Shenzou Steeds and Rothera.

Horses To Follow

Spring Cheer (Flemington) – flew home for second behind Star Rolling, while the winner was impressive look out for this 3yo filly from NZ racing beyond 2000m.

Endless Shadow (Flemington) – was the eye-catching run in the last race, struck interference in the straight but when she found clear galloping room hit the line very strongly.

No Ifs Or Buts (Randwick) – the Apache Cat doppelganger, a very green 2yo gelding who looked gone at the turn but somehow found a second wind and burst out of the ground in the final 100m.
