The centenary edition of the Tour de France begins this evening with the 213km ride from Porto Vecchio to Bastia. We’ll have live updates from 10.00pm AEST.

As cycling fans around the world wake up this morning they will be buoyed by a sense of anticipation, excitement, and ultimately relief that the day they have been longing for is finally here; the beginning of the centenary edition of cycling’s greatest and most prestigious event – Le Tour de France.

Yes it is finally here and tonight the riders embark on Stage 1 of their 3403km, three-week journey around France with a 213km ride across the French island of Corsica; travelling from the tiny boat town of Porto-Vecchio to Bastia – the northern tip of the tiny island.

Whilst most spectators and TV viewers are most looking forward to watching the exhilarating battles that are sure to eventuate between the likes of Froome, Contador, Evans, Rodriguez, Hesjedal and maybe even the out of form Andy Schleck for the yellow jersey in this year’s Tour, those fireworks will likely have to wait to pop until later in Le Tour.

Tonight’s stage is a short, sharp and flat journey that is unlikely to unsettle the peloton and hence provide a perfect opportunity for the sprinters to gain the spotlight.

Therefore we are likely to see the likes of Mark Cavendish, Peter Sagan, John Degenkolb, Andre Greipel and Marcel Kittel thrashing it out for stage honors on Day 1 of this year’s race.

Australian sprinter Matt Goss will also fancy his chances in today’s stage, but to take the stage win the Orica GreenEDGE rider will have to produce one of the performances of his career considering the quality of the sprinting field.

As will as the fact that the Tasmanian has only notched one Grand Tour stage victory in his career thus far.
