The 2013 Irish Derby: preview

This weekend the latest renewal of the Irish Derby happens at the Curragh. Run over a distance of 2400m it is, as always, open to both three year old colts and fillies.

In the past, certainly in the 90s, it was a contest between the English and French Derby winners to see who would be crowned the champion three year old of Europe. In more recent times it has been dominated by the Ballydoyle team – Aidan O’Brien is going for eight in a row this year.

Some recent runnings of the Irish Derby haven’t been the strongest, the 2009 renewal was absent of Sea the Stars due to unsuitable ground while horses like Treasure Beach and Frozen Fire didn’t amount to much afterwards.

This years running seems a stronger fare with all the main protagonists from the Epsom version involved.

From the outset, Ruler of the World looks the one to beat – he won the English Derby earlier in the month.

In the last 12 years, Ballydoyle have done the Derby double three times with Galileo, High Chaparral and Camelot.

Second to Ruler of the World at Epsom was Libertarian, he should be up there in places in this also. Others to consider are Sugar Boy and Trading Leather, both have useful form going in to this.

However there’s nothing to suggest that Ruler of the World won’t win this if he repeats his Epsom performance and I expect him to do that, with Trading Leather behind.
