2011 Tour de France champion Cadel Evans said it is highly unlikely that he will compete at the 2014 edition as he wants to purely contest the Giro d’Italia.

“It’s not 100 percent confirmed, but at this point it looks like I’ll probably do the Giro,” Evans told AFP.

“It’s unlikely that I’ll start in the Tour de France, and that leaves me with a lot of time and energy to concentrate on the Giro,” Evans added.

Evans, the only Australian to have won the celebrated yellow jersey, is also amongst the oldest riders to do so when he won the famous race at the age of 34.

Age appears to have caught up with Evans since then, with the tenacious Aussie barely managing to finish the past two editions.

However Evans had a good showing at this year’s Giro, finishing third as Italian Vincenzo Nibali took out his home race.

Evans has worn the Maglia Rosa at on three stages in Italy, and the Giro was the very first Grand Tour he rode in 2002, nearly winning it in the process.

If Evans were to win the Giro in May next year, he would join the illustrious company of Eddy Mercx, Fausto Coppi, Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond having won two or more of the Grand Tours.
