As Round 11 gets underway, that means we are a third of the way through the season. We’ve seen so many amazing tries so far, but how about the other side? How about the amazing try saves we’ve seen?

Incredible moments of defence can be crucial to keeping teams in the game. I’ve picked out five that I personally believe were impossible, but somehow these men pulled these tackles off.

5. Josh Reynolds on Daniel Tupou, Round 5
With the scores locked at 8-8 with 55 minutes gone, the Roosters spread the ball across field, Michael Jennings drawing in Corey Thompson and passing to Daniel Tupou.

Sam Perrett was too far in-field to get to Tupou but Josh Reynolds comes across and tackles the winger out of the corner. From live vision it appeared Tupou had scored, but replays showed his knees slid across the sideline.

This proved to be a crucial tackle as the Dogs went on to win the game 9-8. Notable mention to Sam Perrett’s try saver on Mitchell Aubusson in this game as well.

4. Corey Thompson on David Simmons, Round 3
Simply a classic try saver. With 32 minutes gone it’s 10-6 Penrith way. On the last tackle Jamie Soward puts a chip over the top and regathers. He puts another kick in which is caught by David Simmons on the run.

Corey Thompson is coming across in cover and gets Simmons four metres out from the try line and the two jump out of play. I have watched this tackle over and over again because it’s simply awesome. The Panthers go on to win 18-16 with a kick after the buzzer.

3. Michael Morgan on Matt Gillett, Round 9
Three minutes into the game, and Matt Gillett runs onto a short ball 10-metres out. He breaks through the line and for all money he is going to score.

Somehow Michael Morgan pulls off one of the greatest tackles this year by holding him up. Notable mention to Rory Kostjasyn, who lends Morgana hand in holding Gillett up. It’s not easy to stop a steam roller so close to the line. Cowboys went on to win the game 27-14.

2. Josh Morris on Shaun Johnson, Round 10
Yes another Bulldog’s try saver. The Dogs are leading 16-12 with about five minutes to play when Shaun Johnson makes a break from 40-metres out.

Johnson has Sam Tomkins coming up on the inside, but decides to take it himself. Johnson beats Sam Perrett and that moment was when all Bulldogs fans’ hearts hit the ground. Then Josh Morris comes flying from nowhere and takes Johnson around the shoulders, pulling him into touch. The Bulldogs went on to win the game 16-12.

1. Jarryd Hayne on Sony Bill Williams, Round 6
Last year’s wooden spooners are leading last year’s premiers 14-12, with just three minutes to play. A determined Sonny Bill Williams crashes through the line and over the try line.

It was only a desperate tackle by Jarryd Hayne to roll Sonny Bill Williams on his back that secured the win for Parramatta. The strength needed to stop this steam roller and win the game is the reason why Hayne gets the number one spot on my try savers of the year list.

What do you guys think, did I leave someone out? Do all these blokes deserve their spot on the list? I’ve loved what this season has given us so far, and let’s hope there’s plenty more of these try savers to come.
