Silverstone is the home of British motorsport. This weekend it will be home to Mercedes AMG’s Lewis Hamilton who will be on the horizon to win his fifth race of the season. Join The Roar for live coverage of the 2014 British Formula 1 Grand Prix from 10:00pm (AEST).

For Hamilton, the last few races have been very shaky especially the DNF in Canada which saw him lose 18 crucial points to his teammate Nico Rosberg in the championship.

In Austria two weeks earlier, driver error in qualifying had seemingly ruined the Briton’s prospects of winning that race; however he was able to in the end limit and the damage and finished second to Rosberg.

A win for Hamilton in front of the extremely passionate British fans at the legendary Silverstone circuit would be the best possible result this weekend, but with Rosberg’s recent run of good results it will not be easy for the hometown hero.

Also if we cast our minds back twelve months, it was Rosberg who won the British Grand Prix despite his teammate starting from pole positions. On that occasion too, Hamilton suffered a dose of bad luck in the form his tyres having a blowout.

In terms of rivals to the Silver Arrows who without a doubt will have this race in their hands (unless they’re hit by reliability or other issues), Red Bull will be in the ring again after their horror weekend at their home circuit in Austria.

Silverstone is a circuit which has naturally suited the Red Bull chassis, with its fast and flowing sections such as the Maggots, Becketts and Chapel complex in the latter part of the lap. This should indicate the potential for another podium result for Daniel Ricciardo, who despite the team’s lack of performance in Austria still brought the car home to finish eighth.

Williams’ strength in the past two races should be a good sign for British fans this weekend. Valtteri Bottas cruised home last time out to collect his first podium finish in Formula One and Felipe Massa’s pole winning lap in qualifying shows that they’re another team in the wings to take over the lead if the Mercedes AMGs trip up again.

Also for Williams, their reserve driver Susie Wolff will be getting her first taste of a race weekend with the opportunity to drive the FW36 during the first practice session. She will also do the same at the next event in Germany.

Ferrari, McLaren and Force India should all be fighting away for points again, unless there is rain (which can happen considering it is England).

The spotlight will be on Jenson Button indeed who during the week was told by his boss Ron Dennis that he needs to ‘try harder’ in getting better results. Button’s contract with McLaren expires at the end of the season.

Once again, unless the weather dramatically changes over the course of the weekend it is certain that the Mercedes AMGs will dominate at the front, but it will as always be a good battle to see who is the best of the rest.
