Decorated Triathlete Emma Moffatt is one of Australia’s best hopes for Glasgow gold in the Athletics events in this year’s Commonwealth Games.

What’s My Event?
The Triathlon is one of the Games’ most demanding events, a combination of a 1.5 km swim, 40km cycle capped off with a 10km run.

Who Am I?
Emma Moffatt was born in the town of Moree, New South Wales in 1984, and began to participate in sports such as cross country and surf lifesaving from an early age.

It’s no surprise that she wound up as professional triathlete, given it’s an event that both her parents and all three of her siblings have participated in. She competed in her first Triathlon at the age of 13.

Moffatt describes herself as a fierce competitor, following a rigorous diet and training 24-30 hours a week to be ready for her events.

There’s more to her life than the triathlon though. Alongside her numerous list of honours and accolades, Moffatt lists being an aunt as one her proudest achievements. She also has a degree in Human Movement & Education.

Career to Date
Moffatt’s first major career milestone came in 2007 when she was named the Australian Triathlon Athlete of the Year, and she followed this up by gaining selection for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

She won the bronze medal at Beijing, finishing behind fellow Aussie Emma Snowsill who claimed the gold, and Vanessa Fernandes of Portugal who won Silver.

In 2009 she was named the Australian Institute of Sport Athlete of the year, and won the 2009 Triathlon World Championship on the Gold Coast, before backing this up with a second World Championship in Budapest, 2010.

Glasgow 2014 will be Moffatt’s first appearance at the Commonwealth Games. Her performances have been a little below their usual standard lately as she builds towards full fitness and hopefully she’ll hit her peak in time for the games.

She’s still in the top 10 of the world rankings and ready to give the gold a serious crack!

Get Around Her!
One of the things that shines through about Moffatt is her insistence that her success – and has had plenty of it – has been the result not of natural talent, but of good old fashioned hard work.

This is the sort of personality that we Aussies simply can’t get enough of, the athlete who pushes themselves to be the absolute best that they can be regardless of whether they’re talented or not.

Emma already has more than enough career achievements to finish up with her head held high, but we should all gather around to cheer her on to cap it off with some Commonwealth gold.
