Could we have another Black Caviar? Struggling with injuries as a young horse, Sistonic, the three-quarter sister to arguably Australia’s greatest ever mare, appears to be hitting her stride.

Apart from what trainer David Hayes described as an “arrogant” ride from apprentice jockey Jye McNeil it was smooth sailing as Sistonic easily accounted for her opponents on Friday night at the Valley.

McNeil didn’t pull the whip in a win that was just under a length but he didn’t need to as it really wasn’t required in the race. There was a late charge from Distraught, but there was never a threat of defeat about it at all.

It now puts the young mare’s record at 2-0 and you get a sense that the daughter of Bel Espirit could really provide some Black Caviar in the near future. The first Test for her will come in the Group 3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) on February 27.

She will be ridden by Caulfield Cup winning jockey Nick Hall who appears to be the short-term rider.

“Nick Hall is booked in the short term, Nick did a lot of riding on her early and Nick does a lot of riding for (Sistonic’s owner) Robert Crabtree,” Hayes told Shane Anderson on RSN‘s Correct Weight.

In the same interview Hayes explained his frustration with McNeil.

“I was frustrated (that McNeil eased her down when he did). I thought it put the filly at risk to be beaten because she switches off when the jockey switches off and all he had to do was maintain her rolling along and she would have won by three lengths and still had an easy run.”

Other news coming through the connections of Red Cadeaux have confirmed that the English stayer will be making the trip down under this autumn for the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m). It sets up a mouth-watering re-match with Protectionist who had Red Cadeaux’s measure in last year’s Melbourne Cup.

It will be the fifth attempt for Red Cadeaux to break his ducks in Australian feature events. His record at Flemington is great with three seconds in the Melbourne Cup, but his career over the 2000m mark is patchy at best.

With that said he did nearly win the Group 1 Dubai World Cup in 2013 and his record at Flemington means he is a realistic chance of taking out the Australian Cup.
