Match result: Serena Williams has completed her second Slam – all four titles – with a 6-4 6-4 win over Garbine Muguruza at Wimbledon.

WILLIAMS 6 6
MUGURUZA 4 4

After winning her first in 2003, with a win at the Australian Open, Williams has added a second Serena Slam by winning the first three events this year and the US Open in 2014.

The world number 1 is on a 28 match winning streak at Grand Slam events and has enough ranking points to remain at number 1 for the rest of the year.

She also moves to 21 Grand Slam titles and now has 6 Wimbledon crowns.

Williams didn’t have it all her own way though.

The opening of the match was dominated by Muguruza as she broke early and raced to a 2-0 lead.

Multiple double faults in the opening game didn’t help the American.

From then on, the world number 1 dominated, but couldn’t break back.

Muguruza would fight to a 4-2 lead before Williams pounced.

She broke in the 7th and 9th games of the set, before holding to take it  6-4.

Williams then continued her form in the second set, racing to a 4-1 lead.

She had won 8 of the last 9 games as she pounced on the Muguruza serve and hit more winners.

Her game, through the nerves going away, started to fire.

The American would break again to love to serve for the match at 5-1.

She couldn’t hold though as Muguruza broke to love to bring it back to 5-2.

The Spaniard would then break again, after holding serve, to bring it back to 5-4.

That would be where the comeback ended as Williams would race to a 0-40 lead on her serve and win the match with her second match point.

It is another incredible win for Williams who continues to press her claim as a legend of the game.

It was also a good tournament for Muguruza, who will now enter the top ten on Monday.

She was upset after the match but will come back bigger and better from this.

Williams will now have a chance to complete the calendar year slam when she competes at the US Open.

In 2003 Williams completed the Serena Slam by winning all four events in a row. It started at the 2002 French Open, her first win at the venue, and finished at the 2003 Australian Open.

She has the chance to do that again this year with a win against Muguruza. It will also keep her in contention for a calendar slam after winning the other two Grand Slams this year.

A win would also give her a 21st singles Grand Slam title, and move her to within three of the legendary Margaret Court, who leads overall with 24.

It’s a lot of pressure on Williams as she looks to strengthen her claim as a great of the game.
The American has played incredible tennis so far in 2015, with a record of 38-1 and three titles.

Williams has also withdrawn from two events – Indian Wells and Rome – but they don’t count as losses.

Williams plays a player who has no experience of a Grand Slam final. Muguruza has been the story of the championships, on the women’s side, in the 2015 Wimbledon event.

At the start of the event she was 20th in the world. With the final appearance she will be inside the top 10 for the first time of her career.

She is currently 9th in the world and could move to 6th if she wins her first Grand Slam title. As correctly predicted by The Roar at the start of the year, Muguruza has arrived on the international stage.

Her game has all the capabilities of being in the top 10. She is great on all surfaces, her serve is strong, and her forehand can deliver plenty of winners.

What has been lacking, in the early stages of her career, is consistency. Just one WTA title in Hobart, in 2014, is all to show for her performances so far. She has a huge opportunity to change that with a win over Williams.

Her tournament has been outstanding so far with some big wins. It all started in Round 2 with a three-set win over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. The Spaniard then followed that up with a three-set win over Angelique Kerber, the 10th seed.

After winning a marathon first set tiebreaker, she won the third set 6-2 to progress. Muguruza then defeated Caroline Woznaicki and Timea Bacsinszky in straight sets to make the semis. A three-set win over Agnieszka Radwanska sealed her progression to the final.

Now she has the chance to become the first female Spaniard since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in 1998 to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Williams and Muguruza have history already with three cracking matches at Grand Slam level. In 2013, at the Australian Open, Williams easily defeated Muguruza 6-2, 6-0. Fifteen months later, Muguruza returned the favour, smashing Williams 6-2, 6-2 to send her packing from the 2014 French Open.

Williams would make up for the loss with a three-set win at the Australian Open. In that win at the French Open, Muguruza surprised Williams with her power and placement. While Williams didn’t play at her best, the Spaniard didn’t allow her to, as she rushed the rallies with plenty of power.

If she does that on grass, she is every chance of causing the upset. Let’s not forget either that under the pressure of a Grand Slam final Williams almost ran into trouble against Lucie Safarova.

The only worry for Muguruza will be her nerves. Can she get into the match quick enough to make sure that doesn’t happen?

Williams is a heavy favourite and she deserves to be. When she plays at her best, she isn’t beaten.

I can see Muguruza giving her trouble, however. She may not win the match but she will give Williams a massive challenge.

Prediction: Williams in three sets
