The Caulfield Cup was first run in 1879 and is held annually at the Caulfied Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria. It is a race over a distance of 2400m, held under handicap conditions, for horses aged three years and over.

The field is eighteen starters with four emergency entries, decided by a ballot system. Performances in the Caulfield Cup are a possible method of qualification for the Melbourne Cup, which is run 16 days later.

Last year the Caulfield Cup was won by Admire Rakti, however tragedy struck later at the 2014 Melbourne Cup when Admire Rakti died from cardiac arrest after finishing last in that event.
