2015 Wimbledon finalist Garbine Muguruza faces a potentially tricky second round match-up against Belgian Kirsten Flipkens. Join The Roar for live scores from 12:30pm (AEDT).

Once again the women’s side of the draw has seen several seeded players depart Melbourne Park and Muguruza will be hoping to avoid another upset when she faces Flipkens today.

No.2 seed Simona Halep was the biggest casualty on Day 2 of the Australian Open, losing to a qualifier that looked very beatable judging by their head-to-head record.

Matches, however, are not played on paper and Muguruza will have to be on her game today to progress past Flipkens.

With the head-to-head ledger all square at one win apiece, the Spaniard should be aware of the danger that Flipkens possesses. The Belgian is an experienced campaigner who boasts a Wimbledon semi-final appearance back in 2013.

Muguruza, of course, is a Wimbledon finalist herself, losing to eventual champion Serena Williams last year in straight sets.

The Spaniard possesses an all-court game that is well served by a very solid forehand and backhand. She hits the ball with plenty of power and will look to blow Flipkens off the court early with her aggressive play.

Flipkens meanwhile also possesses a solid forehand and serve, but her trademark shot is her backhand slice, which she uses very effectively at her best.

On form, Muguruza starts a strong favourite today but it would not surprise to see Flipkens force a three-setter this afternoon. In a competitive affair, Muguruza possesses the power to progress to the third round.

Muguruza in three sets.
