Ninth seed Karolina Pliskova takes on Julia Goerges in the second round of the 2016 Australian Open. Join The Roar for live scores of this match from around 9pm (AEDT).

The first two rounds of the Australian Open have seen 12 seeded female players crash out in upsets, giving Pliskova a much easier draw.

Her motivation will be through the roof to play good tennis and make the pointy end of the year’s first grand slam.

Pliskova had two lead-up tournaments – the Hopman Cup and the Sydney International. At the Hopman Cup she won two from three games, while in Sydney she defeated Ana Ivanovic in straight sets before being knocked out in the quarter-finals by world number two Simona Halep.

Her Australian Open first round saw Pliskova record a straight-sets win over Kimberly Birrell.

Meanwhile Goerges’ only lead-up tournament was in Auckland, where she made it all the way to the final before being beaten by world number 26 Sloane Stephens in straight sets. However, in her previous four matches she only dropped an individual set, playing solid tennis.

Goerges also had a strong win in the first round, knocking Andreea Mitu out 6-3, 6-4.

This match should be a much closer than their respective first rounds.

The pair have previously faced off once before, in early 2014 at Pattaya City, where Pliskova prevailed in three sets.

Prediction
Goerges will push hard but Pliskova should be good enough.

Pliskova in three sets.
