Gerrans nears fourth cycling tour title

Simon Gerrans will cap a dream week when the top Australian cyclist secures his fourth Tour Down Under title.

Gerrans has a nine-second overall lead heading into Sunday’s last stage, the Adelaide street race.

The easy circuit course and the strength of his Orica-GreenEDGE team means that lead might as well be nine hours.

Only some unforeseen disaster will stop him taking out the race.

“It (would be) hard to believe I have won this race four times now,” Gerrans said.

“Every year I come back, it just seems to get bigger and better and it feels like the level of race increases every year.

“So to get a fourth title, I’m absolutely over the moon.

“One stage to go, anything can happen … but I’d prefer to go into that last stage in front than behind.”

Gerrans won the third and fourth stages, making him the first rider in six years to win on successive days in the Tour.

Teammate Caleb Ewan also won last Sunday’s stand-alone street race and then stage one.

While Richie Porte dominated Saturday’s decisive Willunga stage, Gerrans finished eighth to retain his overall lead.

It is a vast change of fortune to last year, when Gerrans’ season was wrecked by a horror run of crashes.

Sunday’s street race is always one for the sprinters and Ewan could well give the team more reason to celebrate with another win.
