One of the greatest underdog stories in sports history is complete. Leicester City, who were languishing in England’s third tier of football just one decade ago, have got their hands on the English Premier League trophy.

With the title already decided heading into match week 37 thanks to Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham last week, Leicester turned on the style for the home fans against Everton.

Opera singer Andrea Bocelli serenaded the home fans prior to kick-off, but the real entertainment got going when Jamie Vardy, back from a two-week suspension, opened the scoring after just five minutes.

Leicester were scarcely troubled by their visitors, and Andy King doubled the lead after some excellent build-up play from Riyad Mahrez. It would have been a moment to savour for King, who made his Leicester debut back in the League One days, and has been with the club through their rollercoaster ride to the top of English football.

Vardy’s second – a penalty after he was brought down by Matthew Pennington – put the game beyond all doubt, although the English striker could have had another from the spot had he not blazed over.

That miss prevented Vardy from pulling level to Tottenham striker Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot. Kane currently has 25 goals, one more than Vardy’s 24, although the Spurs man has one extra game to extend his tally for the season.

Kevin Mirallas did pull back a late consolation goal for Everton, but the Belgian’s effort did little to rain on Leicester’s parade – certainly no more so than the rain which had teemed down during the game.

The final whistle sparked wild scenes at the King Power Stadium, as Leicester finally got their hands on the Premier League trophy to cap off a season few ever thought was possible.
