Andy Murray has had a cracking lead-up to the US Open with the Brit hitting his straps at just the right time.

Since taking his second title at Wimbledon, Murray has claimed gold at Rio, knocking off Juan Martin Del Potro, before a strong campaign at Cincinnati.

The world No.2 defeated Juan Monaco and Kevin Anderson in straight sets before knocking out Aussie Bernard Tomic in the quarter-finals 6-4, 6-4 and Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic in the semifinals 6-3, 6-3 to book a match-up with Marin Cilic in the final, going down 6-4, 7-5 in the end.

After a three-week break, he’s returned with a bang at Flushing Meadows, sweeping past Lukas Rosol and Marcel Granollers with straight sets victories in the opening rounds to make a Third Round appearance against Paolo Lorenzi.

It shouldn’t prove too much of a task for the 2012 US Open champion, however, he will still need to work hard to improve on his game, especially his second serve with the likes of Grigor Dimitrov, Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka shaping as possible opponents in the coming matches.

At the age of 34, Paolo Lorenzi is coming to the end of his career but has finally emerged from the wilderness reaching a career high of world No.39 last week.

The Italian is in the midst of the most successful grand slam throughout his career, reaching the Third Round for the first time having previously been to the second once at the Australian Open and US Open.

His career best tournament has come off the back of a first round straight sets victory over Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 and a massive upset in five sets over out of form 30th seed Gilles Simon 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-7, 7-6.

Lorenzi has nothing to lose and will need to pull out everything in his power to get past Murray. It will certainly be a tough task and one in which the Azzurri will relish.

The pair have played twice, their last meeting came way back in 2006 at Adelaide, with Murray winning 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Prior to that, their only other meeting came in the qualifying stages of the 2005 US Open with Murray triumphing 6-3, 6-2 on his way to making his US Open debut.

The winner will play either 22nd seed Grigor Dimitrov or Joao Sousa in the fourth round.

Prediction
Andy Murray will end Lorenzi’s run, knocking the Italian out in straight sets.
