Rekindling has taken out the 2017 Melbourne Cup by less than half a length to Johannes Vermeer and Max Dynamite who rounded out the top three.

It was a bittersweet moment for trainer Joseph O’Brien, given Vermeer was trained by father Aidan O’Brien.

It completed a superb day at Flemington for the O’Brien family as they locked out the top of the race.

In the post-race interviews, Joseph O’Brien said Aidan was happy for him.

“Yeah I spoke to him. No, listen, he’s delighted. Unbelievable,” said a clearly emotional Joseph after taking home more than $3 million in winner’s prize money.

Jockey Corey Brown, who won his second Melbourne Cup said he was in shock.

“My manager and I chased the ride about six weeks ago. Obviously, with the lightweight, I thought I was a good chance of getting on him, but the O’Brien team… I just can’t believe it.”

Rekindling had to come from behind in the dying metres to take the 2017 crown.

Johannes Vermeer looked like it was going to win, but couldn’t hang on in the end with no other horses within two lengths.
