There are just the three meetings on Monday. New South Wales is racing at Orange, Echuca is where Victorian racing takes place, and there are ten races at Toowoomba. Here are my five plays for the afternoon.
Bet 1: Each-way – Orange Race 1, number ten: Gotta Minute
I’m a bit surprised she is at double figures to win. Bjorn Baker trains this filly, who hasn’t done much in two career outings, but both maidens have carried serious depth. Her Goulburn debut has produced five winners, and next start she ran into Smart Melody. There’s bo horse or depth anywhere near that level here, and I think her trials haven’t been too bad.
Bet: $10 win at $12; $20 place at $3.60 (BetEasy)
Bet 2: Win – Echuca Race 2, number ten: Steamboat Sally
There are a lot of unknowns here, but I think this girl is the safe play. Team Snowden trains her and is first up after a two-run autumn prep in which she was unlucky on debut behind Cath’s Village before bumping into The August at Flemington. Jump-outs have been good and 1100 metres fresh looks an ideal recipe for a first-up win.
Bet: $30 win at $3.80 (Neds)
Bet 3: Win – Echuca Race 4, number nine: Shock Shock
I think she’s a bit of a bludger, but in a bludger of a race she looks the best of them. She just missed out on the win two back at Moe before going to Tatura, where she did a good job against the bias. She draws a soft gate so should get every chance, and one thing we do know is that she’ll be strong late at the end of the mile.
Bet: $30 win (Tote)
Bet 4: Win – Toowoomba Race 9, number ten: Niedorp
She should be winning this, and she looks a really good prospect for Tony Gollan. She trialled here a few weeks ago and absolutely bolted in, winning by a space under little pressure, and the time for the morning matched up well with the older horses, which is always a good sign. I’ll be surprised if she gets rolled.
Bet: $50 win (Tote)
Bet 5: Win – Toowoomba Race 10, number six: Miss Sara
She resumes for the Les Ross stable. This girl hasn’t raced since the winter, when she last raced in the JJ Atkins, where she had clear excuses behind The Autumn Sun, and we know that’s A1 form. She trialled well behind Star Silk, has a good fresh record and has class on her side. With The Autumn Sun form, I’m keen on her.
