One of the key lead-up races to the Melbourne Cup, the Geelong Cup will be raced on Wednesday, October 23 at the Geelong Racecourse. The race is scheduled to start at 4pm (AEDT).

Run over a distance of 2400 metres, the Group 3 race isn’t fooling anyone by its status, with plenty of potential Melbourne Cup runners in the field.

While the Geelong Cup used to be a ballot exemption race for the Melbourne Cup, allowing the winner a guaranteed place in the biggest race on the calendar, this is no longer the case.

In saying that, Steel Prince, who booked a spot in the Melbourne Cup by winning the Andrew Ramsden Stakes all the way back in May, is in the field, along with others on the Melbourne Cup nominations list like Muntahaa, Neufbosc and Prince of Arran, who is the Geelong Cup favourite.

Prince of Arran may be the favourite, but this appears to be a hotly-contested race on the surface, with Steel Pince, True Self and Red Galileo, who could do with a win to move up the Melbourne Cup order of entry, all in the running according to odds and form.

Last year’s race was won by Runaway, however, the champion is not defending the crown.
