Update: Lys Gracieux won the 2019 Cox Plate in a dominant performance. Castelvecchio looked a chance at the top of the straight and Te Akau Shark ran on well for third.

One of Australia’s most famous races, the Cox Plate returns for 2019 with money, glory and a ballot exemption for the Melbourne Cup on the line. This is The Roar’s complete guide to everything you need to know about the race.

The 2019 Cox Plate, set to be held on Saturday, October 26, will get underway at 4:55pm (AEDT) as the eighth race on the program and will be contested over a distance of 2040 metres at the Moonee Valley Racecourse.

The ballot exemption spot on the line for the winner of the race more or less confirms the runner will be racing the Melbourne Cup, should they already be on the entry list after first acceptances were made a couple of weeks ago.

But the Plate itself, part of the famous Melbourne Spring Carnival, is a huge race, with a total prize pool of $5 million on the line.

Winx has won the last five Cox Plates, however, the champion’s retirement means we will have a new winner in 2019.
