The eyes of the racing world will turn its collective attention to the Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday afternoon as one of Australia’s most famous races, the Cox Plate returns for 2019. 14 runners are in the field, and with this handy guide, you’ll know every horse, trainer, jockey, barrier number and running weight for the race.
The race, which is run over a distance of 2040 metres, is part of the world-famous Spring Carnival in Melbourne, and is one of the bigger trots on that schedule.
Not only does the winner of this race receive a large share of the total $5 million prize pool, but a ballot exemption spot for the Melbourne Cup, which all but guarantees the winning horse a spot in Australia’s biggest, and one of the world’s biggest races.
Even once a year punters will know or have heard of many of the horses listed to run in the Cox Plate, such as Avilius and Harlem, but despite a wide draw, it’s Japanese mare Lys Gracieux who is the likely favourite at the time of writing, although she will be given a tough run by the likes of Avilius, Mystic Journey and Kluger.
The race is scheduled to jump at 4:55pm (AEDT) on Saturday, October 26, with it to take approximately two and a half to three minutes around the Moonee Valley Racecourse in Victoria.
