The final chance for a run in the Melbourne Cup goes on the line on Saturday, November 2 in the Lexus Stakes, as Melbourne’s Spring Carnival hits top gear. The race is set to run at 1:40pm (AEDT).

It will be held at the Flemington Racecourse, run as the fourth race on the day’s busy schedule over a distance of 2500 metres.

This is the final ballot exemption race for the Melbourne Cup, meaning the winner of the trot, if they are still on the Melbourne Cup acceptance list, will go automatically into the race.

It’s rare the double has been done given how close the Lexus Stakes is to the Melbourne Cup, however, last year’s winner of this race, Prince of Arran, snuck into the biggest race on the calendar as a result before finishing well down the order.

The last time the double was done came in 2009 when Shocking won both the Lexus Stakes and Melbourne Cup.

At this stage, Sound, Downdraft, Haky, Hush Writer, Neufbosc, Patrick Erin, Sir Charles Road, The Chosen One, Azuro, Wall of Fire and Valac – the entire field bar one – are either on the cusp, or well outside the 24 horses who will be going to the Cup, so there is a heap on the line here.
