Two meetings to look at on Friday night, with my focus at Mildura and Newcastle. The best bets for the respective programs are down below.

Mildura

Best Bet: Race 2 Number 1 Escavador
This four-year-old can make it win one in start one for Aaron Bain. Formerly with John Caldow, he had two runs for the former stable to start his career in the spring and was solid without being great, albeit the races he contested were far stronger than this. He should lead from the pole and in a race lacking depth he’s clearly the one to beat.

Next-best: Race 4 Number 3 Nationaldraft
Boris Devcic has this guy absolutely flying at the moment and no reason why he can’t win again. He has been dominant in his past three outings, each time resulting in strong wins at this track. The way the barrier draw has landed, he’ll lead and just has to hold his form to win again.

Value: Race 5 Number 7 Tearsonmypillow
A bit of a throw at the stumps via this mare. She has only won one race, but she hasn’t been far away throughout her career in races similar to this. She was beaten pretty comfortably here last time out but the overall race was solid relative to the meeting. She should do no work from the gate and can run a cheeky race at odds.

Newcastle

Best Bet: Race 5 Number 10 Delightful Dude
He looks to have a bit too much class for this lot. Jarrod Alchin trains with Cameron Hart to steer. This is a former Kiwi that has had three Australian runs, all coming at Bathurst, where he won the first two in sharp fashion before running sixth. The recent trial was solid enough and even with the second-row draw, he should be too good.

Next-best: Race 6 Number 1 CC Jones
It’s been over 12 months since he has greeted the judge first, but he is racing really well, deserving of another win, and he can get it here. He was brave at Maitland last time, doing plenty of work on speed, running fast splits throughout from the front and just felt the pinch late. He should lead and with a cheap time of it at some stage, he can hold on.

Value: Race 9 Number 1 Sneaky Peak
He’s worth a speck at odds. His recent form is inferior compared to some engaged here, but last time out at Menangle, you could easily make a case to say he should have won. Just had little luck getting clear air at the right time. Drawn the pole, he has gate speed, so he could hold the front and run a bold race at a price.
