There are two meetings to look at on Friday, with my focus at Yarra Valley and Mildura. Below are the best bets for the respective programs.

Yarra Valley

Best bet: Race 1, Number 2, Commander Buzz
He’ll be short but he’ll be winning, all things being equal. He smashed the clock from the front to win at Cranbourne last time, running a fast overall time. He was only second up there so you’d like to think there is improvement to come and if that’s the case, he should be winning.

Next best: Race 6, Number 12, B D Yasothon
This horse is a former Kiwi that makes his Australian debut and is with the in-form Andy Gath camp with Kate Gath. I will say though that lately, these former Kiwis with Gath can go either way. They can improve leaps and bounds, or they can be faulty with manners. The market will be fascinating but off his NZ form, he’s clearly the one to beat.

Value: Race 7, Number 8, Major Delico
This horse is a David Aitken-trained gelding that resumes and he can be dangerous fresh from a good trailing draw. He could potentially land leaders back, three back at worst. He resumes without a trial, but his form from last prep doesn’t read too badly and overall, this is a very winnable race.

Mildura

Best bet: Race 5, Number 1, Thomas Heights
This is a good test for him here, but I am quite confident he can make it four on the bounce. This horse is three from three since joining the new camp and has been dominant each time, both to the eye and on the clock. He’s been running time and that’s a good sign for a lesser class horse stepping up to the plate. I am confident he can do it successfully.

Next best: Race 9, Number 1, Shelby Grace
I reckon this mare races best when on speed, whether it is leading or behind the leader. She gets the chance to get either run from the pole. This horse has been plain in her past couple, but she’s had excuses. She’ll hold the lead here and off her wins a few runs back, that’s good enough to take this out.

Value: Race 3, Number 2, Rocking Wroxton
This horse is still a maiden after 28 starts, but he’s in with a big shout here in what looks like a very thin race. This horse just did a bit too much work from the wide gate last time out. In the start prior he was close up from the pole, and here, he’ll get a lovely run near the speed. He’s big odds, so have a 1×3 speck.
